  • Dr. Charles E. Tegtmeyer served as a combat physician in the 1st Infantry Division from 1940 to 1945. His memoir is important because it is both a detailed account of that famous unit and a rare account of a doctor’s philosophical and clinical approach to war. Dr. Tegtmeyer was always at the place of greatest danger where he demanded much of his beloved medics. Among other decorations, his Distinguished Service Cross, earned on D-Day on bloody Omaha Beach in Normandy so testifies. Many a Big Red One soldier survived the war because of Dr. Tegtmeyer and the men he led.
